JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Officials with the City of Jackson said they’re holding property owners accountable for various eyesores in neighborhoods.

Samantha Graves, with the city’s Planning & Development Department, said neighbors can do something about the eyesores. They can report code violations to the city, and an inspector from the city’s Code Enforcement Team will investigate the violation.

“What we’re asking is that the public search the property first to see if we already have an open call violation. Only at first. And if not, you can apply online. Put in the description whether it’s abandoned, overgrown trash and debris, you know, it gets routed to the office,” said Graves.

She encouraged residents to report all violations, so they can be put in the Code Enforcement portal to track the amount of blight in the communities.

“We’re using our court procedures, environmental court getting in front of the judge, letting them know what’s going on with the property, but then presenting the evidence that we have and from there trying to get fines assessed to the owner and hopefully jail time,” stated Graves.

She said if the city cleans the area, they will put a lien on the property. Neighbors can report violations on the city’s website .
