JACKSON — A 38-year-old township man was charged Friday with stabbing his 74-year-old roommate to death, said Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Louis Gargiso was charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon in the death of Robert Sunris, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Jackson Police were called to a Maple Street home about 5:55 a.m. Friday for a report of an unconscious male, Billhimer said in a joint statement with township Police Chief Matthew Kunz.

The responding officers discovered the man’s dead body -- who was later identified as Sunris -- with a stab wound. A knife was located near the victim, the statement said.

Investigators learned Sunris and Gargiso were roommates at the Maple Street residence and that Gargiso was responsible for his death. Gargiso was taken into custody at the scene and is being detained at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, Billhimer and Kunz said.

The Major Crime Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Crime Scene Investigations Unit of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office were also dispatched to the scene.

The Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy Friday and has confirmed that the victim died from a stab wound and ruled the death a homicide, the statement said.
