Kaitlyn Durrance didn't look like she's taken a decade off from competitive golf.

The Jacksonville Beach native and Providence High graduate who is now a married mother of two and living in Bay Hill, birdied her first two holes and held her rusty short game together to post a 1-under 71 on Monday to take a one-shot lead in the 24th First Coast Women's Amateur, at the Plantation at Ponte Vedra.

Sloane Siebert of Keystone Heights mixed four birdies and four bogeys for a 72. Amelia Cobb of Daytona Beach, who will be a college teammate at Florida Atlantic with Nancy Cox of Ponte Vedra, parred her last 12 holes and finished with a 73.

Shanya Arasu, a Nease graduate and rising sophomore at Flagler College, and Violet Robbins, a Bolles graduate who will enter Rollins College next month, are tied at 2-over 74.

Durrance (who was Kaitlyn Price before getting married), won the First Coast Amateur in 2013 at Deerwood and finished fifth in 2014. She turned professional after graduating from UCF but after two years on the EPSON Tour, she gave up the pro dream for family life and later regained her amateur status.

She joined the FCWA tournament committee last year and then decided to play this year.

"Competitive golf is fun and I missed it," she said. "We [she and her husband Joel] started talking and I was like, 'why not?' I'm going to be up here. Might as well give it a go."

Durrance said she plays with her husband or at the Bay Hill Women's Association and averages a round or two a month.

Durrance began the day with a 12-foot birdie putt at No. 1 and a 6-footer at No. 2, then dropped a pair of 15-foot birdie putts at Nos. 7 and 9.

One of her bogeys was a three-putt, another after failing to get up and down from off the green and her last, at No. 17, was a tee shot in the water that she converted into a pretty good 5.

Durrance also missed three birdie-putt attempts of 6 feet or less, so she's striking the ball well.

"It's in great shape, a beautiful track," Durrance said of the Plantation. "If you're not paying attention it can jump and get you. My lack of practice on the short game has left me a little rough around the edges."

Suzi Spotleson shot 71 to take a one-shot lead over Tama Caldabaugh in the Senior Division.

Caldabaugh, who is playing at her home course, rallied from a double-bogey 7 at the par-5 fifth hole and played her last 13 holes at 2-under, with no more bogeys. She made birdie putts of 12 feet at No. 6 and 15 feet at No. 10.

The second round will be Tuesday with the Super Senior Division beginning play. The final round for all divisions will be on Wednesday.
