Leftover federal funding intended for rental assistance during the Covid-19 pandemic might add more affordable units to a local developer’s multifamily project in North Jacksonville, pending city approval Tuesday.<\p> Corner Lot Development Group often develops market-rate housing like Artea, which is under construction on the Southbank, and Corner on Main, which was topped off in Springfield. <\p>
St. Augustine Christmas store announces possible closure
St. Augustine's Perky Pelican Christmas Shoppe is unlikely to be around much longer, according to the owners' recent social media post.<\p> A post on Facebook Monday said that the shop's lease ends Jan. 31, 2025, and will not be renewed because the owner of the building at 41 San Marco Ave. plans to sell.<\p>
JEA board approves budget for 2025 fiscal year; next stop City Council
JEA’s board of directors approved a consolidated operating budget of nearly $1.99 billion, including a capital budget of about $891 million, for the 2025 fiscal year during a Tuesday meeting. The budget will be sent to City Council for review by July 1.<\p> The consolidated operating budget for the next fiscal year is up from $1.95 billion in 2024, according to JEA records.<\p>

Council to vote on $7.6M settlement with One Riverside developer
The retail development at the One Riverside project in Riverside has been stalled by issues with the city's relocation of McCoys Creek — and the delays could cost the city millions of dollars.<\p> City Council will vote Tuesday on a bill to give One Riverside developer Fuqua Development a $7.6 million partially forgivable construction loan after the Fuqua and the city reached a mediated settlement agreement.<\p>
Hotels show interest in St. Aug airport land, but more study needed
The Marriott and Hilton hotel chains have expressed interest in land owned by the St. Johns County Airport Authority, a Jacksonville developer looking to build on the site told the board during a meeting Monday.<\p> But work must be done before a hotel chain will move forward with a project at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport, said John Joyce, principal of Joyce Development Group in Jacksonville.<\p>

The start of a new direct connection from India and Pakistan to Jacksonville should allow Jaxport to tap into a growing manufacturing industry.<\p> Ocean Network Express’s new West India North America container service started calling at Jacksonville on Thursday. The container service is set to call on Blount Island weekly. SSA Atlantic is providing stevedoring services for the ships and using three new cranes for the containers.<\p>
Amelia Island residents could see utility rate increases
Pointing to issues such as inflation and a need to upgrade technology, Florida Public Utilities Co. will ask state regulators to approve an increase in base electric rates. <\p> Florida Public Utilities Co. is a relatively small electric utility, with 33,090 customers in Jackson, Calhoun, Liberty and Nassau counties. It notified the state Public Service Commission on Tuesday that it needs an estimated $11.5 million to $13 million in additional revenue. A notification letter said the company’s current base rates took effect in November 2014. <\p>

Jaxport moving ahead with crane replacement despite $3 million veto
Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed $3 million in funding for modernizing cranes at the Jacksonville Port Authority — but the decision won't affect the equipment upgrade, the port said. <\p> Despite the slash on funding, the effect on the crane purchases is minimal, according to Jaxport. The port is still slated to receive $23 million from the state this year, part of which will be used to purchase a new crane, said Chelsea Kavanaugh, a Jaxport spokesperson<\p>
IRS announces when payments on ERC claims will resume
The Internal Revenue Service plans to deny tens of thousands of improper Employee Retention Credit applications even as it promises to renew processing legitimate claims.<\p> The agency in an announcement this week said it had taken the time since its Sept. 14 moratorium on processing new ERC applications to analyze the more than 1 million ERC claims filed in 2023 — and found that between 60% and 70% showed an unacceptable level of risk.<\p>
Hanania Automotive Group buys long-time St. Augustine dealership
Hanania Automotive has bought Atlantic Chrysler Dodge Ram in St. Augustine, a family-owned operation that has sold cars in the area for 50 years.<\p> Adding the dealership gives Hanania three stores in St. Augustine, in addition to Jack Hanania Buick GMC and Jack Hanania Chevrolet. The company also has a collision center in the city.<\p>
