Gio goes off on quarterback contracts after Trevor Lawrence's payday

The Jaguars made waves in the NFL world on Thursday night, signing Trevor Lawrence to a massive five-year, $25 million contract extension after three seasons in the league.

Gio couldn’t believe the eye-popping numbers of the deal, especially for a quarterback who led the league in interceptions as a rookie, and took a step back last season after a Pro Bowl campaign in 2022.

Boomer often asks “what’s the alternative?” when talking quarterback contracts, but Gio says there was an easy alternative when it comes to Lawrence.

“The alternative is to not give these guys $55 million a year!” Gio said. “Can you give him a little less?

“You want to lock him up? Fine. But we have to give Trevor Lawrence the same amount of money as Joe Burrow?? These guys are not even close to being the same player! This is out of control now.”

Quarterbacks are making more money than ever before, but Gio doesn’t understand how middle-of-the-pack quarterbacks are receiving such high contract values, like Daniel Jones getting a four-year, $160 million deal after one good season with the Giants. Nevertheless, it is the current landscape of the NFL, and Lawrence is the latest recipient.

“Good for you, Trevor Lawrence,” Gio said. “First year you stunk, second year you were okay, third year you stunk and were hurt, and you get $55 million a year.”
