    JAX TOP 100: Honorable mention list for Northeast Florida top athletes

    Northeast Florida's depth in sports has ballooned since the original Times-Union Top 100 list in 1999. See the honorable mention list for the Times-Union's Jax Top 100.

    HIGHEST HONORABLE MENTION

    Norris Coleman, basketball, Paxon ; second-round NBA Draft choice played 29 games with Los Angeles Clippers in 1987-88 (5.3 points, 2.8 rebounds); twice first-team Big Eight at Kansas State (1986, 1987).

    Clarence Denmark, football, Lee ; seven CFL seasons with Winnipeg Blue Bombers (417 receptions, 5,478 yards, 31 TD), named All-CFL wide receiver in 2014.

    Dane Dunning, baseball, Clay ; 5 MLB seasons with Chicago White Sox (2020), Texas Rangers (2021-24); 27-31 career record, 110 games, 4.73 ERA, 493 K in 536 IP; won 2023 World Series with Texas.

    Brian Ferlin, hockey, Bolles ; first Florida native to reach NHL; played 7 games with Boston Bruins in 2014-15, 1 assist.

    Ernest Gibson, football, Bishop Kenny ; 6 NFL seasons and 72 games with Patriots (1984-88) and Dolphins (1989), 4 interceptions; nickel back in Super Bowl XX; two-time AFCA first-team Division I-AA All-American at Furman.

    Patrick Sapp, football, Raines; 4 NFL seasons with Chargers (1996-97), Cardinals (1998-99); QB converted to LB at Clemson, passing for 2,278 yards and leading Tigers in sacks; SuperPrep All-American with Raines football, state tournament MVP in basketball.

    Austin Slater, baseball, Bolles ; 8 MLB seasons with San Francisco Giants (2017-24), with .256 average, 39 home runs, 159 RBI, 351 hits through June 20; All-Pac-12 at Stanford, two-time FHSAA champion at Bolles (2009-10).

    Caleb Sturgis, football, St. Augustine; 6 NFL seasons, 68 games with Miami Dolphins (2013-14), Philadelphia Eagles (2015-17) and Los Angeles Chargers (2018); 120-150 on FGs, 149-159 on PATs; two-time All-SEC and two-time Lou Groza Award finalist in 2011 and 2012 at Florida; career ended early after hip flexor injury.

    Adrian White, football, Orange Park ; 6 NFL seasons, 70 games, 4 interceptions with N.Y. Giants (1987-91), Green Bay Packers (1992), New England Patriots (1993); first-team All-SEC, second-team All-American at Florida (1986).

    David Lopez-Zubero, swimming, Bolles ; three-time Olympian won bronze for Spain in 1980 Moscow Olympics in 100-meter butterfly; also won four gold medals at Mediterranean Games; part of UF's 1979 NCAA-champion 800 freestyle relay.
