Some people launch fireworks into the sky for July 4. Joshua Patterson activated the Cyclone warning.

The latest member of a flying football family in Jacksonville to find a home in college football, White's rising senior defensive back committed Thursday to Iowa State via Instagram.

The 6-1, 175-pound Patterson is rated as a three-star recruit for ESPN, On3, Rivals and 247Sports, and ranks among the nation's top 60 safeties for Rivals and 247Sports. The USA TODAY Florida Network Top 100 placed him at No. 66 during the spring football campaign.

He selected Iowa State ahead of more than two dozen schools, with Wake Forest also among the top contenders. Patterson is the second Northeast Florida defensive player to select the Cyclones in the past three weeks, after Middleburg defensive tackle B.J. Carter on June 17.

Last year with the Commanders, Patterson intercepted three passes, broke up four and forced a fumble as White qualified for the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 2M playoffs. He also filled in occasionally on offense, catching seven passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns.

He's shown an eye for the football for three seasons now, after intercepting one pass as a freshman and three more as a sophomore. Most analysts project him as a safety in college, although Rivals rates him among the cornerbacks.

For the Patterson family, college football is nothing new. Two older brothers have also gone D-I: Jaison Patterson is entering his senior season as a running back at Bowling Green, Davaughn Patterson likewise starred at White and is currently beginning his second season in the secondary of Wake Forest.

White's season opens Aug. 23 at home against Trinity Christian.
