Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is the top hospital in Florida, according to U.S. News & World Report's latest "Best Hospitals" ranking, which has given the Southside facility the state's No. 1 honor for eight of the last 10 years.

Advent Health Orlando took top honors in 2019 and, under its former name, Florida Hospital Orlando, in 2015. Mayo tied with UF Health Shands in Gainesville in 2020.

"We are humbled and honored to once again be ranked as the top hospital in Florida by U.S. News & World Report," Dr. Kent Thielen, CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida, said. "Our outstanding teams are dedicated to continuing to push the boundaries of medicine while providing the highest quality care to each of our patients."

Mayo also earned "high performing" status for 19 types of medical procedures. The hospital also has earned the top ssatte ranking

How does U.S. News & World Report compile the rankings?

For 35 years, the magazine has annually evaluated about 5,000 hospitals in about 30 medical and surgical services. Using data from the hospitals and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, U.S. News evaluated each hospital based on "risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care, among other criteria," according to the magazine.

U.S. News also ranked hospitals' complex care in medical specialties such as cancer and cited those that were "high performing" in common procedures and conditions such as knee replacement and heart failure.

"Choosing the right hospital to match your needs shouldn't be a guessing game," said Ben Harder, the magazine's chief of health analysis and managing editor. "The 2024-2025 edition of Best Hospitals provides patients and their families clear, data-driven insights on hospital performance and empowers Americans to choose the facility best suited to their specific health care needs."

Did other Jacksonville-area hospitals make Florida's best list?

Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville ranked 11th in the state, followed by Ascension St. Vincent's Riverside at No. 22.

"It is always an honor to be recognized among the top health care systems in Northeast Florida and the state," Baptist Health CEO Michael Mayo said. “Our community is fortunate to have access to such excellent care.”

Dr. Syed Jafri, chief clinical officer for Ascension Florida, said, "Every patient who receives treatment at a St. Vincent’s location is provided with high-quality care from the moment they walk through our doors. We are blessed that our physicians and care teams are being recognized for their quality, patient-centered care."
