Jacksonville Jaguars training camp report: QB Trevor Lawrence has another two-pick day

By Garry Smits, Jacksonville Florida Times-Union,

Here are the mantras about Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence after four training camp practices:

    • It's early.
    • The team is not in full pads yet (that will happen Tuesday).
    • The defense, under new coordinator Ryan Nielsen might be that good.

    All valid points.

But the facts are these: Lawrence has five interceptions in four practices after throwing picks on Saturday to safety Andre Cisco in a 7-on-7 period and to outside linebacker Travon Walker (after the ball was deflected at the line of scrimmage) in an 11-on-11 period.

Safety Antonio Johnson might have had a third in 11 on 11 but he dropped an underthrown ball intended for Brian Thomas Jr.

Lawrence, who had only one interception through the first four practices of camp last year, was 7 of 16 in 11-on-11 periods and a bit better in 7 on 7, completing 6 of 7 with his only incompletion a deep pass intended for Christian Kirk that was picked off by Cisco.

In a two-minute drill period, Lawrence was 3 of 7.

It wasn't all bad for Lawrence. He completed a pass to Thomas for the rookie wide receiver's second catch and first touchdown of training camp from 20 yards out and hit Devin Duvernay with a gorgeous deep ball for a touchdown, after Durvernay got wide-open in the corner.

Lawrence is 39 of 64 in team periods (60.9 percent) so far in camp.

    Practice report

Duration: One hour, 30 minutes, helmets and spiders (small shoulder pads).

Weather conditions: Sunny, with a temperature of 80 degrees to start, 89 degrees at the finish, with 69 percent humidity and a heat index of 94 degrees.

Injuries: Safeties Andrew Wingard and Josh Proctor both missed practice with what the team described as illness. Cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Jarrian Jones, who both had ankle injuries on Friday, did not participate in the team periods. Safety Darnell Savage wore the orange non-contact jersey for the fourth day in a row.

Upcoming schedule: The team is off on Sunday, practices in Monday at 9 a.m. and then goes into full pads for the first time on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

    Offense: Running backs looking sharp

    • Running backs Travis Etienne, Tank Bigsby and D'Ernest Johnson continue to run hard and make precise cuts. Johnson scored a touchdown from 5 yards out of Lawrence's final snap of the day in a team period.
    • Quarterbacks C.J. Beathard and Mac Jones also struggled in the two-minute drill period. Beathard completed 4 of 7 passes and Jones 1 of 5. However, Jones broke free on a scramble and raced to the end zone. Coach Doug Pederson had blown the play dead when Jones got into the clear. Beathard was 11 of 18 overall and Jones was 10 of 15. Jones later hit Joshua Cephus with a deep TD.
    • Both Beathard and Jones mishandled center snaps, the first plays of that kind during camp by any quarterback.
    • Wide receiver Parker Washington dropped a pass from Beathard over the middle, with no one around him. Kirk and tight end Evan Engram also had drops.
    • After only one presnap penalty in three practices, the offense had two, a false start and a delay of game.

Defense: Travon Walker has a good day

    • In addition to his interception, Walker pressured the quarterbacks twice.
    • Yasir Abdullah tipped a Lawrence pass at the line of scrimmage and had a pressure.
    • Pass break-ups were recorded by cornerbacks Ronald Darby and De'Antre Prince, linebackers Caleb Johnson and Andrew Parker Jr. and safety Daniel Thomas.
    • Linebacker DeShaan Dixon blitzed Lawrence and forced him to spike the ball.

Special teams: Mixed day for kickers

    • Placekickers Cam Little and Riley Patterson both went 4 of 5 from varying distances in a team kicking period. Little's miss, from 48 yards, drifted just past the left upright. Patterson was wide left from 52 yards. Both made attempt from 56 yards.
    • Little hit attempts of 57 and 46 yards to end two-minute drill possessions, and Patterson missed wide right from 57 yards. Little then missed twice at the end of 11 on 11 periods, including a 52-yard attempt that was short and right.
    • The Jaguars practiced kickoffs using the new formation that will be used this year but Cephus and Jalen Jackson both fumbled during the period. When the Jags had a punting period, Duvernay and Washington, who are projected to be the team's starting returners, got through the session with no fumbles.
