For one UFC fighter, survival was all that was on his mind this past weekend.
And it had nothing to do with the Octagon.
Ramon Taveras, a member of the UFC bantamweight division, was involved in a drive-by-shooting. Taveras posted video of the incident that took place in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida last Monday.
While leaving his mother’s home, a group of armed men unloaded on the house. Taveras posted that he returned fire and “made it out with no injuries.”
“It’s unfortunate that I even have to make a post like this,” he wrote. “But I cannot let this be swept under the rug.”
Taveras took aim at local authorities, saying “this city is unforgiving , and it’s worse that JSO does nothing to correct the problem.” He posted that he lost his brother in 2019 to gun violence.
“They assumed I was targeted due to ‘gang violence’ or a problem I caused,” he wrote. “I don’t bother anyone. I stay in my own lane.
“Nobody is perfect, and everyone has a past. However, I have changed significantly from who I was 10 years ago.”
Taveras added that he is “happy to be alive, but I’m leaving duval.”
UFC Fighter Nearly Hit During Drive-By-Shooting
Taveras is coming off a split decision win vs. Serhiy Sidey in January. After going 1-1 on Dana White’s Contender Series, he earned a rematch with Sidey.
The two had met in 2023 on the series with Sidey scoring a finish. Taveras rebounded with a finish of his own in just 28 seconds.
Along with a win over Charles Bennett, Taveras is 10-2 in his career.
