A permanent marker will be erected to honor the victims of the racist mass shooting nearly a year ago at a Dollar General store in the New Town community.

City Council approved the marker 17-0 on Tuesday night.

Council member Ju’Coby Pittman introduced the bill. She said the council’s support gratified her.

“We cannot forget things that cause hate and tragedy in our community and that we also remember that those families are still healing,” Pittman said.

Aug. 26 will mark one year since a white gunman opened fire at the Dollar General store on Kings Road in an attempt to kill Black people. Killed were Dollar General employee Anolt “AJ” Laguerre Jr., along with Jerrald Gallion and Angela Carr.

A ceremony is scheduled at 3 p.m. Sunday at Kings Road & Almeda Street on Sunday to unveil the marker and other tributes to the victims.
