Free Fourth Friday

Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens | Riverside

As ever, there’s a lot on view at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. And on Friday, visitors to the revered Riverside institution enjoy free admission from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Free Fourth Friday. Of note: Check out the museum’s newest exhibition, Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories ; as well as a series of movie posters from Jacksonville’s historically important Norman Studios; and some of the museum’s most-delicate pieces, Works on Paper from the Cummer Museum’s Collection . Also on Friday, Artist William McMahan hosts a drawing class ($25 for members, $35 for non-members). The museum is open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday (free after 4 p.m.). More info .

100-Year Anniversary Exhibits

MOCA | Downtown Jacksonville

Starship Abundance , a new multi-disciplinary exhibition of works by New York based, Peru-born artist Emil Alzamora, is just one of several new exhibits on view at MOCA, as part of the institution’s 100-year-anniversary programming. Alzamora’s work joins the late-Frank Stella’s large-scale sculpture installation, Jacksonville Stacked Stars, the latest Project Atrium. Meanwhile, University of North Florida student artist-in-residence Elysa Adams’ Voices of Moncrief remains on view. And an exhibition of more than 100 works – many of which by less-heralded artists with no formal training, hailing from the Deep South – called Fill My Heart With Hope: Works From The Gordon W. Bailey Collection, currently fills two floors of the museum. MOCA is open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays are free. More info .

Jacksonville Caribbean Carnival

Metropolitan Park | Downtown Jacksonville

The marquee event of the four-day Jacksonville Caribbean Carnival is Saturday’s steel-band-led parade at Metropolitan Park. The festivities also include Caribbean food, arts and craft vendors and live music. Noon-9 p.m. Tickets start at $10. More info .

Honoring Chick Corea

Blue Jay Listening Room | Jacksonville Beach

In honoring the late, great Armando Anthony “Chick” Corea, Duval-based jazz pianist Joshua Bowlus and an all-star cast of players certainly have their work cut out for them. Throughout his legendary career, Corea explored a wide ambit of music, as the pianist had a hand (or two) in several paradigm-shifting eras of jazz – introducing what would become Latin-jazz standards as a solo artist and member of Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo and Stan Getz in the early 1960s; ushering in the post-bop era as part of Miles Davis’ band in the late ’60s and early ‘70s; and pioneering jazz-fusion into the ‘80s.
