With so many great bands of the past nearing their final days as touring rock bands, the farewell tour is the so-called last hoorah. Some have a lot of them, and they make a lot of money with higher-priced tickets and merchandise. Many fans and people in the industry feel many farewell tours are a con. Groups like the WHO have had 4 of them

A Rock Band Tells the Truth:

Take, for instance, the iconic English band Deep Purple. They started in the late 1960s and are considered pioneers in the heavy metal and hard rock genres.

Deep Purple is touring again, with dates on the east coast of America and then going to the UK, Netherlands, and Germany, to name a few. Lead singer Ian Gillan recently made a rare confession that their tour in 2017, which was supposed to be their final tour, was just a lie to sell concert tickets for lagging sales.

During a recent interview with SiriusXM’s Eddie Trunk, Gillan said, That was a joke in 2017. "Actually, because it was the promoters. And someone said, 'We've got to sell some more tickets'. And it's the good old standby, the farewell tour. So I said, ‘OK, we'll call it the 'goodbye' tour, but let's call it 'the long goodbye', and let's put the emphasis on the word 'long' so it's kind of an enigmatic phrase."

The trick worked, and more tickets were sold. Now, seven years later, Gillan says that even today, the band does not intend to quit any time soon.

The first city on the American part of the tour is on August 28, as Yes will open up for them. That will be in Gilford, at the NHBank Pavilion.
