Unless you are in the west, the cooler breezes are already being felt in some places. As with most drinks and foods, the history is muddy, and the Hot Toddy is no exception. Most though say it was created in the 1610's in India which was under British Rule at that time. In the 1700's Britian claimed the drink as their own. According to one publication, in 1786, they defined a hot toddy as an alcoholic beverage made with hot water, sugar, and spices.

    San Francisco Hot Toddy Haven:

San Francisco is noted for it's cool weather due to the fog so hot toddy's are a treat all year round in many bars. While the famous Buena Vista is almost a must go to, espeically for their famous Irish coffees, they also have good hot toddy's.

Yelp did a great vote on who has the best hot toddy in San Francisco and here are the top 10 in San Francisco. Some like the White Cap & the Fireside Bar which have great fireplaces. The Fireside Bar is also dog friendly so be prepared to pet a sweet pooch or two.

    Classic Hot Toddy:

    Ingredients:

1½ ounce brown liquor such as brandy, whiskey or rum

    1 tablespoon honey

    ½ ounce lemon juice

    1 cup hot water

Lemon wedge, cinnamon stick and star anise, for garnish (optional)

    Directions:

Combine the first four ingredients into the bottom of a warmed mug. If desired, garnish with the lemon, cinnamon stick or star anise.
