On Wednesday, September 18th, America will celebrate National Cheeseburger Day. According to some historians, this year it is a special one because the cheeseburger was invented 100 years ago. Some restaurants are even having sales for it.

Using bread, meat, and dairy products for sandwich-type food can be dated back to the 1200's. According to the website Spruce Eats, the modern and official cheeseburger can be traced to a 16-year-old boy in Louisville, Kentucky. His name was Lionel Sternberger, and in 1924 he put a slice of American cheese on a hamburger that he made at his father's sandwich shop in Pasadena, California, called the Rite Spot. They loved it and first called it a cheeseburger.

The first time they used the term cheeseburger was at Kaelin's restaurant by Charles Kaelin in Louisville, Kentucky. This was the first time that a restaurant said that they had invented it. Another restaurant after that called Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, Colorado, soon trademarked it and named it and said that they had invented it in 1935.
