In a decision that surprised some, the California Department of Vehicles announced that the State of California will not require a resident 70 years of age or older to take a written exam to renew their license. The DMV also said that anyone that has already received their renewal with that said the test is required will have the test waived as of October 1st. Any new renewal letters will have the new law added to them.

With so many people going to the DMV, the state is trying to allow people to get their licenses online to reduce the crowds. They are also trying to limit the number of people that go into the DMV to renew their licenses. Officials feel that with fewer people going to the DMV, the service will be faster and more efficient. Even with the changes, officials remind residents that an eye test and updated photo are still required.
