Oak Ridge Police accepting applications for Citizens Police Academy
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (Aug. 15, 2024) – The Oak Ridge Police Department is accepting applications for its next Citizens Police Academy which is set to begin next month. Applications for the program are due by Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. Classes will meet weekly, on Thursdays, from Sept. 19 to Nov. 14 from 6 to 9 p.m.

City Passes New Public Alcohol Ordinance
Cookeville City Council rejected a delay to the city’s new public alcohol event ordinance Thursday night, though members did not close the door to further changes. The ordinance allows outdoor public events hosted by non-profit organizations to serve alcohol at the Putnam County Fairgrounds and the Leslie Town Centre parking lot. Tennessee Tech campus areas and the Golden Eagle Golf Club are not covered by the new ordinance. Council Member Eric Walker again asked for opportunities to include street closures based on local business involvement. Council Member Luke Eldridge said the businesses talking to Walker do not appear representative.
Sparta To Provide Free Weather Radios
Sparta Aldermen voted Thursday night to match a $10,000 TVA Community Care Grant, allowing the city to provide free weather radios. Sparta Mayor Jerry Lowery said he got the idea after a resident told him they did not have a way of getting severe weather alerts. Lowery said the radios will better inform Sparta residents of when severe weather is approaching.

CRMC Stroke Center Honored For Its Care
Cookeville Regional Medical Center honored for ensuring stroke patients receive appropriate care. The American Heart Association awarded Cookeville Regional “The Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.” Stroke Center Joint Commission Coordinator Randi Stafford said receiving the award reflects the hard work the Stroke Center staff puts into taking care of stroke patients. Stafford said the hospital has emphasized stroke patients as they saw over 800 cases of strokes in 2023.
