    Pistons and Props: Plane rides, vintage cars, hangar dance among the fun at July 20 airport show

    JANESVILLE — Pistons and Props, hosted by Propel Forward, will celebrate vintage airplanes and classic cars next weekend.

    The event is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport, 4004 S. Oakhill Ave, Janesville.

    “The show is a chance for aviation and car aficionados to take in these vintage marvels up close,” event chair Joshua Gowey said. “It’s a great event for families. Not only is it educational and inspiring, but it’s also just a really fun way to spend the day.”

    Advanced tickets for Pistons and Props can be purchased at www.pistonsprops.com. They are $5 for those aged 6-16 and $15 for those aged 17 and older. Tickets will also be available at the gate. Children five years old and younger may enter for free.

    Parking is free.

    Admission, flight and special photography tickets can be bought at www.pistonsprops.com.

    In the case of inclement weather, the event will take place on July 21.

    Airplanes

    In a release, the Janesville Convention and Visitors Bureau said there will be rides available on the B-25 “Miss Mitchell,” C-47 “That’s All, Brother,” SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber, T-6 Texan and BT-13 Valiant, as well as static displays of local aircraft.

    There will also be a T-6, T-34, T-28 and the featured display aircraft, the AC-47 “Spooky,” a fixed-wing gunship developed by the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

    Airplane ride prices generally range from $269 to $495. It costs $1,195 to take a ride in the dive bomber, according to the release.

    Classic cars

    Up to 300 classic automobiles will also be on display for the car show hosted by Traffic Jams Speed Shop. Exhibitors can sign up at www.pistonsprops.com.

    Exhibitors will have an opportunity to have their car photographed with a vintage airplane. Pre-registration is required for the photo ops and airplane rides at www.pistonsprops.com.

    Gift bags will be given to the first 100 cars to register. Registration includes two tickets to Pistons & Props. Car show awards will be announced at 1 p.m. People’s Choice winners will receive a Pistons & Props bomber jacket, trophy, mug, and key fob.

    Family activities

    Children’s activities will include five bounce houses, face-painting, a pedal race track and carnival games. A large education tent will feature a wide range of activities. There will be displays and an aviation challenge by Women in Aviation, history and a wind tunnel by the Kelch Aviation Museum, automotive education at the 4-H booth and aviation education from Propel Forward.

    Additional activities will include rocket building and launch using compressed air, a paper airplane contest, 3D printer displays and an art station.

    The Rock River Aero Modelers Society booth will have a radio-controlled aircraft and a flight simulator.

    There will be guest speakers from the Women in Aviation and the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport tower manager, and a presentation on the life of an airline pilot by a Boeing 787 pilot.

    Other displays include a re-enactor Army Jeep and camp, the Rock County Sheriff’s Department, Mercy React Ambulance, American Legion of Orfordville, the Mercyhealth Mobile Clinic, Janesville Fire Department, Beloit Fire Department, Clinton Fire Protection District and the U.S. Armed Forces. UW Health Med Flight is scheduled to arrive at 11 a.m. And flyovers are planned by the Cirrus Aircraft Group and Red Star Group.

    Food and drink will be available for purchase, including a beer garden. There will be music performances by Mark Croft from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Dem Horny Funkers from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

    Hangar dance

    Wrapping up the day, Pistons and Props has partnered with ECHO of Janesville to present a Big Band Hangar Dance fundraiser featuring Ladies Must Swing, an award-winning, 18-piece all-female big band. It takes place from 7-10 p.m. at the Revv Aviation Hangar 4606 S. Atlantis Dr., Janesville. Tickets are $40. This is a separate ticketed event, with proceeds going to ECHO.
