Zimmerman paces field after first round of Janesville Men's City Golf Tournament

Matt Zimmerman, a 2018 Janesville Parker graduate, leads the Janesville Men’s City Golf Tournament after shooting a 2-under round of 70 at the Janesville Country Club on Friday.

He started out hot, making birdie on his first three holes at the country club and adding two more later on his front nine to go out in 5-under 31. But he came back to the field a bit on the back nine after a double bogey on the par-4 14th and another bogey to end the round.

Drew Morrison, last year’s champion and a two-time tournament winner, was a shot behind with a 1-under round of 71, as was 2024 Janesville Craig graduate Easton Haworth.

The next lowest scores were four rounds of 2-over 74 by Xander Wuetrich, Matt Behm, Sam Van Galder and Dustin Richards. Van Galder is in search of his 10th city championship, which would break a record he shares with the late Jan Hoffman.

The second round of the tournament will be played Saturday at Glen Erin Golf Course, and Sunday’s final round will be staged at Riverside Golf Course, which has been celebrating its 100th anniversary this golf season.
