    Join A Free Film Screening Event By Memory Builds The Monument

    HOUSTON, TX - Want to see a short movie screening on Saturday night this weekend? You can join this short documentary film premiere of 5th Ward's historic club Matinee for free.

    Hosted by Memory Builds the Monument, this film screening event will be held on Saturday, August 28 from 8:00 PM to 11:30 PM at MoonStruck Drive-In, 100 Bringhurst Street.

    Musical legends James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles often performed at the popular Houston nightclub 5th Ward. Musical legends and locals alike also know Club Matinee as "The Cotton Club of the south".

    This film screening event will feature "Memory Builds the Monument", a new short documentary that recounts the wonderful memories of former and current 5th ward who have their own memories of those remarkable years.

    A renowned artist and native of 5th Ward, Mel Chin with producer Miriam Heads and filmmaker Greg Carter are the producers of this short film. Among 5th Ward natives who were interviewed and will feature in the film are the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Houston Algenita Davis, recently named as 2022 Texas Three-Dimensional State Artist Jesse Lott, the founding member of the R&B group Archie Bell, and pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Rev. Harvey Clemons.

    Directed by award-winning filmmaker Isaac Yowman, the movie is an artist-led project driven by vivid emotions and conversations by several Houston elders and families that surrounding the memories of Club Matinee. "Memory Builds the Monument is the core of a greater project that includes ongoing oral history interviews.

    This film screening event will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmaker and artists. There are also opportunities to participate in the creation of community interviews.
