A remarkable feat 50 years later
When he was the governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter canoed the infamous Bull’s Sluice on the Chattooga River to draw attention to the Chattooga River, shared by Georgia and South Carolina. The year was 1974, the year the federal government recognized the Chattooga as an official wild and scenic river and gave it the protections it enjoys today. And, now 50 years later, a local conservation organization will celebrate the Chattooga as a Wild and Scenic River, and the public is invited to be part of the event. The group Stay Wild Chattooga Conservancy offers an evening of music, a farm-to-table dinner, along with a bar service from 6 to 10 Saturday night, August 3 at the Chattooga Belle Farm, Damascus Church Road, Long Creek.
