Debbie woods is a 50-year-old English woman dubbed the most jealous wife in the world. She is married to Steve Woods, whom she forces to take lie detectors whenever he leaves the house. However, the ordeal Steve must endure satisfying his wife’s insecurities doesn’t stop there. He is also banned from watching television shows because Debbie doesn’t want him looking at pretty actors.

Besides Steve’s twice-a-week lie detector tests and the TV ban, Debbie has complete control over his phone, email account, and bank statements. Moreover, Steve is also forbidden to view women’s pictures in magazines.

While it’s unbelievable to lead such a restricted life, let alone be in a marriage where trust is so lacking, Debbie, who is size 22 and weighs 294 pounds, is too overweight to work and too shy to go outside to exercise because she fears folks will make fun of her looks and weight. So instead, Debbie keeps Steve tied up at home by spending part of her government allowances to buy him gaming consoles.

Debbie, when questioned about her lifestyle choices, defended herself. She said,

“My disability, my carer’s allowance, my income support. You can’t turn around and say to someone, ‘Oh because you are obese it’s your fault.’ It wasn’t my fault the weight came on. It’s a sad state of affairs that I can’t leave my house to get the exercise I need for fear of other people making fun of me.”

As incredible as Debbie’s story is, there is a reason why she behaves the way she does. For one, Debbie suffers from morbid jealousy, otherwise known as Othello syndrome, a type of paranoid delusional jealousy. Although the condition affects males more than females, the disorder is characterized by frequent accusations of infidelity. The ailing partner searches for evidence that may involve subjecting their loved one to repeated interrogations, tests, and stalking.

As jealousy is a human trait, researchers are investigating jealousy by carrying out a cross-cultural analysis. One such recent study investigated four countries, including the United States, and has concluded that people from “egocentric and masculine cultures like the US were more likely to express jealousy.” Similarly, neuroscientists from Cambridge University, in their research, found that delusional jealousy like the one Debbie suffers from is what sets off stalkers.

Even though Steve is much younger than Debbie, their eleven years age gap and the ordeal he is subjected to didn’t stop him from marrying her. As weird as it may sound, there is love in the relationship. That much is obvious because, like you, I can’t think of any other reason why anyone would endure leading such a lacking life with someone they didn’t care for.

Besides the weight insecurities and her delusional jealousy, Debbie now works as a plus-size model and claims her new job makes Steve jealous. Meanwhile, Steve is also happy and busy playing the three X-box consoles that Debbie bought to keep him occupied, courtesy of being married to the most jealous woman in the world.
