On July 17, JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s member/guest speaker was Martine Chery- Hilaire. Martine is originally from Haiti and has lived in Junction City for 15 years having been petitioned by her mother to be able to come to the United States. After five years, Martine joined the Army and ended up at Fort Riley. Martine owns and operates the Chez Matou Green Machine Food Truck located on North Washington Street in Junction City.
Voters select name for baby Masai giraffe at Kansas City Zoo
KANSAS CITY—The Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium asked for your help to name the new giraffe calf. The female Masai giraffe was born to mom Makali on June 30. The calf weighed in at 125 pounds and and stood 5 feet 6 inches tall and she is growing quickly.
Full-scale exercise will be held on Post Wednesday
Fort Riley's annual full-scale exercise is scheduled for today, July 17. During the day, residents, employees and community members may notice an increase in emergency response vehicles and "Giant Voice" loudspeaker announcements. Some roads on the installation may be closed and traffic may be rerouted due to exercise activity.

Public invited to celebrate 100 years of broadcasting at K-State
K-State became a pioneer radio voice when station KSAC first aired on Dec. 1, 1924. The university will commemorate this historic milestone as the first educational broadcasting station in Kansas with the K-State Radio Centennial: A Century of Sound and Service. Sheriff investigating death of Kansas teen in crash near lake
DOUGLAS COUNTY—A Kansas teen died in an accident near Clinton Lake in Douglas County. The victim of the crash has been identified as 17-year-old Brody Minton of Lawrence, according to a media release from the Douglas County Sheriff. Family members reported him missing on Monday and law enforcement had attempted to find him. Douglas County sheriff's deputies searched Monday and Tuesday searched extensively including the campgrounds at Clinton Lake and were working to locate his vehicle in the area.

Convention selects new register of deeds
Jacqie Reisinger has been elected during a Geary County Republican Central Committee Convention to fill the unexpired term of Register of Deeds, Diane Briestensky Leonard, who is retiring Aug. 30. Prison for road-rage beating death of 74-year-old Kansas man
BUTLER COUNTY —A Kansas man man is going to prison for a road-rage beating death of of a man in 2023. On July 10, Ashton McCoy, 24, was sentenced to 21-years in prison, according to Butler County Attorney's office. In May McCoy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault.
