Top three hiking trails within the city of New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Hiking is a fun outdoor activity, mostly done in forests or other hiking trails far from the big city. For New Orleans residents who are looking for a hiking trail just nearby the city, here are some options available.

COUTURIE FOREST

The 60-acre forest is filled with trees, rivers, and wildlife all in the middle of New Orleans City. You can jog here or just take a stroll as you witness the beautiful view of the forest. You don’t have to worry as the trails are maintained.

Along the lagoon, some seating area is provided if you need to rest. The forest is open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

BAYOU SAUVAGE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

This 24,000 acres wildlife refuge is rarely visited. Here you can see both fresh and brackish marshes and coastal hardwood forests. A boardwalk path, restrooms, and picnic pavilion are provided. Enjoy the bottomland hardwood forest scenery as you learn about the marsh ecosystems. Plants and trees here are labeled, so they are easy to be recognized. They maintain the trail as well.

Located at 20876 Chef Menteur Highway, Bayou Sauvage provides parking facilities for visitors. You can do many activities here, such as birdwatching and fishing. Call 985-882-2000 to check the operating hours.

BARATARIA PRESERVE VISITOR CENTER

You can meet alligators and other species of birds here. Barataria Preserve Visitor Center, a 23,000 acres wetlands in Marrero provides a boardwalk, education center about the environment, and of course, dirt trails. Visitors can understand how Louisiana’s wetland is made by joining the field trip provided here. A Junior Ranger program is available if your kids want to join in.

Located at 6588 Barataria Boulevard, this visitor center opens on Friday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For programs at the environmental education center, visitors are encouraged to make a reservation by calling 504-589-3882.
