Dillard University's professor was awarded for laser invention

    2021-08-27

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Dr. Abdalla Darwish, the Presidential Professor of Dillard University received the third patent for his invention of the multiple laser beam pulsed depositions of composite films. The patent was given by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The invention was created from research that was supported by multiple grant awards from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Army Research office.

His invention has a relation to the system and method used for multiple-beam laser deposition of thin films. To erode the material from separate targets for a common substrate deposition, separate laser beams are used. The different materials were mixed to shape a new nanocomposite thin film.

The targets include polymers, organics, inorganics, nanocrystals, solutions, or materials mixture. Pulsed laser, MAPLE, IR-MAPLE, and other modes are used at the various targets.

Darwish said that these patents will help the Physics Department of Dillard University to compete in international nanocomposite film fabrication research. The students will also receive an opportunity to take part in the direct training about research and technology of fabrication in flexible devices and other applications.

The assistant vice president of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Theodore Callier said Professor Darwish’s inventions give positive impacts both for the scientific community and Dillard. The continuous success proves Dillard’s commitment to research, as well as giving benefits to the university.

Dillard University is ranked on number three of the top producers of African American physics bachelor’s degrees according to the American Institute of Physics. This premier private undergraduate university specialized in physics. The university is a historically Black institution and was founded in 1869, making Dillard the oldest Historically Black Colleges and University in Louisiana.
