District 9-5A preview: players to watch, things to know
The LSWA first-team all-state selection is an Ole Miss commitment and is noted for his explosive play off the line. He was a first-team all-district selection last season and has been a tackling machine for the Tigers. He is also a two-time state wrestling champion. TaRon Francis. WR | Edna...
Three areas in Atlantic being monitored for potential tropical development
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is keeping its eyes on a few disturbances for potential tropical development, but it’s the one swirling a few hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic that is the primary focus for forecasters.
Louisiana Flash Flood Watch: Heavy Rain Threatens I-10/12 Corridor
New Orleans, LA – A flood watch remains in effect for southern Louisiana as heavy rainfall continues to threaten the region. The National Weather Service issued a warning for potential flash flooding along and south of the I-10/12 corridor, extending through the weekend. According to the National Weather Service,...
Week in Review, Aug. 26-Aug. 30: Times They Are A-Changin’
I may not be the biggest Bob Dylan fan, but Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of the legendary singer in an upcoming biopic has brought the blue-eyed musician’s words back into my thoughts. Dylan’s 1964 anthem, “The Times They Are a-Changin’,” resonates as powerfully today as ever:
New Orleans used $10 million to bring health services into schools. Will it last?
After two different students came to school nurse Jennie Thompson needing follow-up treatment for gunshot wounds, she knew something had to be done. Two years ago, a student walked into Thompson’s office at a New Orleans high school nearly doubled over in pain, a paper towel taped to where a chest tube had recently been removed. He had just been released from the hospital after recovering from a gunshot wound, but he clearly wasn’t healed.
The Rocky Mountain Saints? Sean Payton is building them with plenty of help from New Orleans.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Zach Strief would not have left the New Orleans Saints for just anyone. The former Saints tackle, play-by-play announcer and coach had called New Orleans home for 17 years and had signed a contract on his dream home in Old Metairie when Sean Payton called last year and offered him the chance to coach the Denver Broncos offensive line.
1 Thing the New Orleans Pelicans must learn from the CJ McCollum trade
NBA roster building is a tricky business. No matter how great a trade, draft pick, or free acquisition appears at first, there's always a chance that it doesn't pan out the way that the organization expects. Recently, there have been plenty of examples of "slam dunk" moves that didn't actually work out.
Nicholls siblings inspire, push one another through sports
This season will be super special for Nicholls defensive back Tyler Morton. On one hand, Morton is a sensational player who is both a Preseason All-American and also Preseason All-Southland Conference, a player who realistically can play himself into a spot at the professional level this fall. But on the...
The winner of the Hahnville-Fontainebleau jamboree dominated in the trenches
Fontainebleau’s jamboree against Hahnville on Aug. 29 was a struggle for the home team. The Bulldogs turned the ball over three times and gained less than 70 yards of total offense as the Tigers won 27-0 at the Dawg Pound. The good news for Fontainebleau is that the game...
Nine people died when tornado hit Louisiana church fair. Descendants memorialize tragedy century later.
The citizens of Vacherie had been praying for rain. And around 3 p.m. on August 24, 1924, it appeared their prayers had been answered. “It had been a drought for like three months or longer,” said David Hubbell, a descendent of those in Vacherie that day. “All of a sudden, the clouds came out … but then it started getting really bad. Bad wind and rain.”
Destrehan and two LSU commitments are focused ‘trying to reach the end goal’
The expectation at Destrehan is always the game: To reach the Ceasars Superdome with the chance to win a football state championship. It didn’t happen last season, when the Wildcats had their 25-game winning streak stopped in the state quarterfinals at home against Zachary. The next chance will come...
Bridge's history of race crimes resurfaces after dedication to Vietnam War hero
A bridge renamed after a local war hero harbors a nearly century old dark past. Two young Black men were hanged for alleged crimes, and one lived to tell the tale. A crowd of nearly 50 people gathered Aug. 11 to celebrate the renaming of a bridge in honor of a distinguished Navy war hero, Glenn H. Daigle, who grew up in the town of Labadieville. Unbeknownst to all in attendance, 91 years ago the bridge was the site of two lynchings that left one 16-year-old dead, with a terrorizing message hanging from his feet for all to see.
Mega Millions Winner: Louisiana Lottery Confirms Friday’s Big Win
This is the weekend that people in Louisiana have been talking about since January. It doesn't matter where you have the conversation. It could be on the beach at Grand Isle, in the exercise yard with the girls in St. Gabriel, or sitting quietly spinning fidgets in Pineville or Jackson, at some point college football will be discussed.
Dianna Rusinni says 'vibes are high' around Saints QB Spencer Rattler
The Spencer Rattler hype train isn’t slowing down. Matter of fact, it’s only gaining more steam by the day. The Athletic’s Dianna Rusinni is the latest member of the national media to praise the potential of Rattler. She changed the game, though, by mentioning Derek Carr. She...
A huge special teams play by Holy Cross sparked a jamboree triumph over Belle Chasse
Friday’s jamboree doubleheader at Bobby Nuss Stadium in Chalmette began with Holy Cross taking on Belle Chasse. Holy Cross started off slow on offense, but they shut out Belle Chasse 22-0 after Luke Appe recovered a blocked punt by Jonah Weir for a touchdown late in the first half that ended up sparking a strong second half.
