JEANERETTE, La ( KLFY )– The hours long hostage standoff that happened in Jeanerette started off with the city marshal trying to serve an arrest warrant. However, the standoff turned into a hostage situation resulting in four Lafayette Police Officers being shot, with one being killed during the incident.

Trinity Charpentier said he was outside during the entire standoff and said things could have gone differently. Charpentier said Hurst was visiting when the City Marshal attempted to serve him an arrest warrant. According to McKenzie Liebaert, one of the hostages, Hurst has been in and out of jail and did not want to go back and this led to Hurst barricading himself in the home with Leibaert and a 16-year-old juvenile. Both Leibaert and the juveniles where hiding in the bathroom while Hurst was armed for hours. She said she told him there’s only one way out of this and that’s with law enforcement.

“We were mainly in that bathroom,” Leibaert said. “I told him the place is surrounded, you know, like there’s no getting out out of here thinking that you’re not going with them.”

News 10 spoke with State Police who said they are the investigating agency in the deadly officer-involved shooting which resulted in the death of Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette who served as a SWAT Police Officer. Police also said the suspect is in custody and is no longer a threat to the community.
