STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — First New York City, now upstate New York. An earthquake occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed. The a 3.4-magnitude quake occurred in Jefferson County, and was centered in Lake Ontario. It could be felt in parts of Canada, and Central and Northern New York, according to a map provided by the USGS.

It's not often that an earthquake hits New York State, but that's what happened late Friday night. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 3.4 magnitude quake occurred at 11:45 PM underneath the eastern part of Lake Ontario. The quake was centered approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Henderson, New York in Jefferson County. USGS received reports of the quake being felt in Hamburg in Erie County and as far west as Meadville, Pennsylvania.
