ALBANY — A new state record for longnose gar was set on June 2. Using a topwater swimbait, Chuck Zimmerman of Hilton, Monroe County, reeled in a 15-pound, 14-ounce longnose gar from Butterfield Lake in Jefferson County, state Department of Environmental Conservation officials said in a news release.

Chuck Zimmerman of Hilton, Monroe County, reeled in a 15-pound, 14-ounce longnose gar from Butterfield Lake in Jefferson County on June 21. Measuring more than 53-inches long—state angling records go by weight only—Zimmerman’s prehistoric pointy-faced fish thrashed the previous state record longnose gar, caught in Lake Champlain in 2018, by one pound, four ounces.
