This article was originally featured in our sister publication, Northwest Travel & Life. Nestled amid the inviting landscapes of the Olympic Peninsula lies a not-so-hidden gem for food enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Beyond its famed national park wonders, the Olympic Peninsula boasts a thriving food and farming culture that beckons visitors from near and far. At the heart of this culinary haven is the picturesque Chimacum Valley, often hailed as the Gateway to Port Townsend and the fertile breadbasket feeding its surrounding areas.
Young artists show skill with zines at Northwind Art
This spring and summer have seen a number of graduations, ranging from Jefferson County high school graduations, to alumni of those same local schools completing their specializations within the military, such as Chimacum High School Class of 2022 alum Isaac Reid graduating from the Coast Guard Intelligence Specialist A-School on June 7.
A look at candidates in recent local, national forums
In the past 15 days, I’ve witnessed two candidate events: the Jefferson County Democrats forum with County Commissioner candidates Heather Dudley-Nollette and Ben Thomas, and the CNN Presidential Debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. All compete with ample experience: Dudley-Nollette as deputy executive director of Bayside Housing, former...

After meetings in Port Ludlow in January and Chimacum in April, May and June, the community group that’s seeking to connect Jefferson County to statewide and nationwide non-motorized trail systems finally has a name. A shared path with the USCG — 30 years apart
This summer saw two U.S. Coast Guard members, both of whom had graduated from high school in Jefferson County, engaging in a generational succession of sorts. Capt. Brian Erickson graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1992, while Isaac Reid graduated from Chimacum High School in 2022. June 7 saw Reid at another graduation, this time from Coast Guard Intelligence Specialist A-School, where he also advanced in rank from seaman to petty officer third class.
Rhody royalty grace Chimacum commencement
The Rhododendron Festival on May 18 was the third parade in three weeks for Rhody Queen Paige Govia and Princess Rosemary Schmucker. Govia and Schmucker, both seniors at Chimacum High School (CHS), first represented Jefferson County at the Apple Blossom Festival Grand Parade in Wenatchee on Saturday, May 4. “It was rainy,” said Schmucker, but “fun” because of the large crowds, including many enthusiastic small children who made heart signs and blew kisses at the Rhody court as they passed.
Playing pool involves deep pockets
It increasingly looks like our new community pool, if it’s ever built, won’t be in Port Townsend. It will probably be in Chimacum or, more likely, in Port Hadlock. Get ready for a longer drive, fellow PT swimmers. Why not build it in PT, this frustrated swimmer asked...
In praise of the democratic process
Politics has always been rough and tumble in America, with the last near-decade hitting dramatic lows. It is natural to want to turn away but resist that urge. The local impact of the decisions to be made in November extend well beyond the colossally important presidential race. There will be...
