JEFFERSON, NJ – The much-anticipated temporary bridge over the Rockaway River on Route 15 is now operational according to New Jersey Department of Transportation.  Two lanes are open one week ahead of the initial schedule.

Route 15 was closed in the area on June 4 when the road was found to be unsafe.  The issue arose during the construction of a new bridge to replace the 124-year-old bridge.  That construction is ongoing.

The new bridge construction “will continue on an accelerated schedule to meet the  original expected completion time of fall 2025,” according to the NJ DOT. The bridge comes with a price tag of $11.6 million.

According to the NJ DOT, “the new permanent bridge will be a single-span concrete box beam structure with two 12-foot-wide travel lanes, 10-foot-wide inside and outside shoulders, and sidewalks on both sides of the bridge. The project will advance in stages to ease impact on motorists. NJDOT will provide advance notice of any lane or ramp closures.”
