Two from UIC Baseball Selected in 2024 MLB Draft
CHICAGO (July 17, 2024) – The 2024 MLB Draft concluded on Tuesday afternoon, as two UIC baseball players and one 2024 signee heard their names called to play professional baseball. Ryan Smith (West Chester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) was selected in the ninth round by the Houston Astros and Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Northeast CC) was also chosen in the ninth round by the San Francisco Giants. 2024 signing class member Ethan Dorchies (Cary, Ill.) was selected in the 10th round by the Milwaukee Brewers.
5 juveniles charged in violent robbery on CTA train
Chicago police arrested five juveniles between the ages of 11 and 15 in connection to a violent beating and robbery on the CTA in early June. Police said a 63-year-old man was attacked by a group of kids on a CTA Orange Line train.

FORT WAYNE (ADAMS) – The Storm Prediction Center sayas it was a derecho blew across Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio early Tuesday morning. A derecho is a straight-line windstorm that occurs over a large area with wind gusts of at least 58 mph. The storm spawned several tornadoes along it’s leading edge including twisters at O’Hare and Midway airports in Chicago and in northern Indiana.
