CAMBRIDGE — Mother Nature cut exciting racing action short on Saturday evening at Jefferson Speedway.
But before the rain began to fall, two of the five features planned for the night ran to completion in the 2024 version of the Stock Stub Special at Wisconsin’s Action Track.
Jefferson’s Chase Wangsness scored the big feature win in the Hobby Stock 40-lap main event presented by Ryan’s Auto Care.
Steve Dobbratz cleared for the lead as he crossed the stripe to complete the opening lap of the race. On lap five, Braeden Yelland moved up to second, bringing Wangsness along for third. Two laps later, Wangsness dove under Yelland, stealing the second spot just before the sole caution of the race slowed the pace.
Dobbratz and Wangsness led the field back to green with Wangsness firing into the lead on the restart. Dobbratz fell back to second until feeling pressure from Hunter Milbrath on lap 15. Milbrath drove under Dobbratz as they raced into turn one, moving ahead to claim the runner-up position a lap later.
At the halfway point of the race, Wangsness was enjoying a healthy lead as the top three began to cruise. Wangsness, Milbrath and Robbie Rucks raced to the finish without being seriously challenged as the remainder of the event ran caution free.
At the checkers, it was Wangsness all alone for the win with Milbrath, Rucks, Avery Linnerud and Chester Williams rounding out the top five.
In International division action, it was Jefferson’s Weston Strese grabbing the lead on a late restart and hanging on to capture the 25-lap feature event.
David Russell and Timothy Higgins brought the field to green with Russell taking the early lead on lap one. Higgins fought back to the inside of Russell until the yellow waved on lap three for the first of three cautions. Russell and Higgins made up row one on the restart with Russell once again taking control of the top spot. Higgins stayed close on the inside of Russell while Karter Stark moved up to join the battle at the front.
On lap five, Stark drove under the two leaders, creating a three-wide fight for first. Stark and Higgins emerged side by side with Stark eventually taking the top spot for himself on lap seven. Stark remained in control following the second caution while his dad, Kyle Stark, moved up to second on lap ten. Strese followed into third as the leaders lined up single file. On lap 17, Kyle Stark encountered a problem with his machine, forcing him to pull off the racing surface and handing Strese the second position.
Strese began to close in on Karter Stark as the laps ticked away. With three laps to go, the final yellow flag flew, setting up a shootout to the finish with Karter Stark and Strese side by side for the restart. As racing resumed, Strese drove ahead to claim the point. Strese held Stark at bay over the final circuits to claim the win with Stark settling for second. Jason Uttech was third followed by Blake Nottestad and Mark English.
The remaining portion of the program that was postponed due to rain will be completed at a later date.
Racing resumes on Saturday, July 20, with the running of the Orange Blossom Special twin 61-lap super late model features as well as the return of the Midwest Truck Series and the Legends. Time trials begin at 4 p.m. with racing at 6 p.m. Visit jeffersonspeedway.com for more information.
