    Summer baseball: Jefferson splits doubleheader with Belleville

    JEFFERSON -- Jefferson's summer baseball team split a doubleheader versus Belleville on Wednesday, losing 6-1 before a 17-0 win at Fischer Field on Wednesday.

    Belleville scored four times in the second inning of the opening game, jumping ahead 5-0.

    Mason Merz notched two hits for the Eagles (9-3).

    Gavin Berge started for Jefferson, allowing five earned runs on four hits in two innings in the loss. Cale Schmidt then tossed four innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts before Sam Steies threw a scoreless seventh.

    In game two, the Eagles had a 14-2 advantage in hits. Tyler Altermatt went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Tyler Steinke and Noah Copsey added three RBIs apiece while Nolan Burzlaff scored three runs.

    Copsey pitched two no-hit innings with three strikeouts before Altermatt tossed two shutout innings, fanning five.

    MONDAY'S RESULT

    JOHNSON CREEK -- Jefferson scored the go-ahead run via error in the eighth inning in a 3-2 win over host Johnson Creek on Monday.

    Sam Steies opened the eighth with a single and Mason Merz followed by drawing a walk. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Finn DeBlare reached via error on a grounder, allowing both runners to score.

    Johnson Creek got a two-out run on Adam Whitehouse's single in the eighth.

    Three Jefferson pitchers combined on a five-hitter. Mason Merz started, allowing a run on two hits with four strikeouts in four innings. Bentley Wagner then pitched two scoreless innings before Sam Steies allowed a run on two hits with two punch outs in two frames to earn the victory.
