Southern Red Velvet Cake: A Dessert Staple The Whole Family Will Love

Red velvet cake is my son's favorite dessert. The rich red color and not overly sweet cake with indulgent cream cheese icing is so good.

I make this as a layered cake with 2 or 3 layers.

I would eat a slice alone, with nothing else.

    Enjoy!

    Ingredients

    For the Cake:
    • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
    • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
    • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
    • 2 large eggs, room temperature
    • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

    For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
    • 4 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1-2 tablespoons milk (as needed for consistency)

    Directions

To start, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder, and set this mixture aside.

In another bowl, combine the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar, mixing until well combined.

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined; be careful not to overmix.

Once your batter is ready, divide it evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

After baking, allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the cream cheese frosting by beating the softened butter and cream cheese together in a large mixing bowl until creamy and smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing until well combined, then stir in the vanilla extract and add milk as needed to achieve your desired consistency.

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of cream cheese frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake. Finally, slice and serve your beautiful Southern red velvet cake, and enjoy!

    What do you think?

This is a year-round staple dessert in my house! Enjoy!
