I love to add red pepper flakes to my plate to make it a little spicy. This recipe is so good!

    Ingredients

    For the Meatballs:

    • 1 pound ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
    • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (Italian-style or plain)
    • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 tablespoon dried)
    • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (optional)

    For the Sauce:

    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 small onion, chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
    • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon dried basil
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

    For the Spaghetti:

    • 12 ounces spaghetti
    • Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving

    Directions

    Make the Meatballs:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix until just combined.
    • Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.

    Cook the Meatballs:
    • In a large skillet or pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside.

    Make the Sauce:
    • In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
    • Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir in the sugar, salt, pepper, basil, and oregano. Bring to a simmer.

    Combine Meatballs and Sauce:
    • Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let simmer in the sauce for 20-25 minutes, until cooked through.

    Cook the Spaghetti:
    • While the meatballs are simmering, cook the spaghetti according to package instructions in a large pot of salted boiling water. Drain and set aside.

    Serve:
    • Toss the cooked spaghetti with a bit of the sauce or serve it plain with meatballs and sauce on top.
    • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley and extra Parmesan cheese.
