JERSEY CITY, N.J. (PIX11) — New Jersey residents got a front-row seat to the Macy’s fireworks show in Jersey City Thursday night.

It was the first time in years that the light show had been back on the Hudson River, giving locals a chance to see the fireworks up close.

Families and friends spent the day anticipating the dazzling display at the annual Jersey City festival and concert. Montgomery Street transformed into a festive haven of live music, a mouth-watering lineup of food trucks, and kid-friendly activities. Victoria Higgs came from East Orange, New Jersey to take part in the festivities and take in some views.

“Jersey City pier,” Higgs said. “You know, walk up and down the pier sometimes and the fireworks. Nice scenery.”

Performances by rappers Fat Joe and Wyclef Jean electrified the crowd who danced and sang along to their iconic hits.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said the Independence Day celebration comes at a time when it’s needed most.

“You’re in a place right now where there’s a lot of division in the country,” said Mayor Fulop. “It’s an opportunity maybe to reflect a little bit on all the things we can be thankful for and celebrate the country.”

Revelers took the time to celebrate America’s independence and enjoyed a chance to connect with their vibrant community.

“You got the great view of Manhattan right behind it,” said festival-goer John Bredin. “You got the people here. You got the food and a sense of community. It’s a strong community vibe that’s here that is just unbelievable.”

The Macy’s fireworks show is the biggest fireworks show in the country and residents are already looking forward to next year’s big show.
