Council OKs fire agreement between Calimesa, Yucaipa
On July 15, the Calimesa City Council approved a new automatic aid agreement between the cities of Yucaipa and Calimesa. The terms of the new agreement mean the cities can share resources when providing automatic aid responses for emergency medical and rescue incidents. A previous agreement had limited the cities to sharing resources only when it came to structural and vegetation fires.
Morongo Valley is the latest addition to the Little Free Library world-wide network
Little Free Libraries are popping up all over the Morongo Basin, with the latest addition in Morongo Valley. With locations in 29 Palms, Landers, and Yucca Valley, the most recent Little Free Library has been built on the corner of Rawson and Mecca about a mile up from Hwy 62. Community members Ray Kennedy and Foster Tucker are the stewards of this tin roofed book exchange, and while it’s only a foot tall and approximately three-feet wide, the works it currently houses span a large range; from the fantasy of J.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings to the non-fiction Los Angeles dystopia of Mike Davis’s City of Quartz.

Long unfinished East LA mural honoring veterans is completed and celebrated
The East Los Angeles community celebrated the unveiling of a mural honoring veterans at Ruben F. Salazar Park that had been unfinished for nearly 15 years. Seniors who frequented the community room at the park raised funds from 2006 to 2009 for a mural honoring local military service men and women. They collected photographs from the community of veterans and their families and with funds raised, hired artist Richard Haro to create the "Among the Valiant" mural.
