The After School Program hosts the Summer Camp through Jessamine County Schools. It provides students in the county with child care from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

According to the After School Program (ASP) website, the program aims to “support working families by offering reliable and high-quality care that promotes the social, emotional, and physical well-being of each child.”

The Summer Camp runs for eight weeks, beginning on June 3. This summer, it is being hosted at Nicholasville Elementary School. It provides all-day child care for Jessamine County kindergarten through fifth-grade students.  The camp starts at 7 a.m. every weekday and ends at 6:00 p.m.

During the day, campers partake in many activities. These activities include outside time, organized games, rotations, and crafts. Students also practice reading and math once a day on IReady, an online learning program, to stop the summer skill backslide from happening. Additionally, the camp staff walks the students to Rock Fence Park every Thursday. The camp also has different themed weeks, where students do activities based on the theme.

Students are also taken on an off-campus field trip once a week. They have been to the movies, the Louisville Zoo, Skyzone Trampoline Park, The Horse Park, Main Event for entertainment, and the Jessamine County Public Library. They have also had several traveling activities come to the camp, such as STEM-based performances, library employees, and magicians.

According to the after-school program director, Heidi Klug, 100 students are enrolled in the camp. The program sees around 85 campers on a daily basis.

Also according to Klug, the best part of camp is “Bringing the kids in, and trying to give them a summer they look forward to even though their parents have to work. We can still make it fun and engaging for them. I love when they get sad to leave, and want to stay longer.”

Summer Camp wraps up on Friday, July 26. The After-School Program is still accepting applicants for the 2024-2025 school year. To enroll a student, visit the Jessamine County After-School Program website.
