Actually the typical senior who paid into Social Security the minimum required years will get much more. Various studies have estimated that around 70-80% of seniors receive more from Social Security than they contributed. A study published by the Urban Institute found that nearly 75% of retirees received more in benefits than they paid into the system. Another analysis indicated that about 80% of beneficiaries will collect more over their lifetimes than what they contributed. That's why it is such an important benefit to protect.
