Opinion: NBC Hires Former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel. Their Own Reporters Object. Shouldn’t We?

Ronna McDaniel the head of the RNC since 2017 just announced her resignation from that position and was quickly hired by NBC News and MSNBC.

According to an internal memo issued by Carrie Budoff Brown, senior VP of politics,

“It couldn’t be a more important moment to have a voice like Ronna’s on the team.”

    Really?

Are we talking about this moment, the broader more encompassing national moment that includes the upcoming 2024 election with a man who would really like to become a dictator (but just for the day), and not that singular moment when she finished writing that memo and thought, wow this is a cool idea?

Because we are talking about an individual who demonized the press in the past and would not acknowledge that Biden won the 2020 election fairly.

Who was on a phone call with the former president in 2020 “asking” two Michigan election officials to not certify Biden's win in that state.

Carri Budoff Brown further stated in her internal memo -

“NBC News has a legacy of serving its audience through reporting that reflects and examines the diverse perspectives of American voters … this variety of voices builds on our rigorous reporting and helps bring audiences and voters closer to the thinking and decision making within our halls of powerfar-right.”

Huh. There’s just a hint in this memo of searching for a good reason for doing what she just did, hiring a person with a dyed-in-the-wool, etched-in-stone perspective of America’s political landscape and particularly the former president Trump’s place in it, while at the same time trying hard to not making ratings an issue.

“Diverse perspective” may speak to one network’s unwillingness to watch another network capitalize on the far-right segment of the political spectrum while they limit themselves to the other side.

But News is not the same as a sitcom or American Ninja Warrior. It’s about fairness in reporting – it is. A clear and unbiased perspective given to its audience – the American people so they can indeed form their own opinions. In other words, it's serious business.

So how does putting a person in a position as a reporter or analyst on a major network who wants one thing really bad – to re-elect Trump – improve that network’s reporting?

How does this support fair coverage of the upcoming elections when her views are rooted in the 2020 election and it getting it wrong on who should have been president?

If you’re wondering what the Trump camp is doing right now after hearing the news of her hiring, it would be safe to say it’s that little dance that the former president perfected during his rallies.
