    Introduction

I write extensively about the current state of U.S. grocery and pharmacy chains, including the popular Hy-Vee supermarkets.

In recent days has come word of three separate Hy-Vee markets closing in high- poverty areas, leaving many residents without food and pharmaceutical options. These stores are on First Avenue in Cedar Rapids, Rockingham Road in Davenport and Logan Avenue in Waterloo.

According to a May 21st report from The-Sun.com, the closures are sparking fears of a food desert in each area.

As excerpted from the report, as it regards the Cedar Rapids location: This store was built on the back of taxpayer support, and its closure betrays the community's trust and investment," State Representative Sami Scheetz said in a statement shared by CBS affiliate KGAN.

The next closest Hy-Vee location is in the Mound View area, nearly two miles away.

As for the shuttering Davenport location, the next closest Hy-Vee store is a six- minute drive or one hour by bus. Regarding Waterloo, the next closest grocery store is an 11-minute bus ride. That store is All-In Grossers.

In both cases, the buses arrive once per hour.

Each store closure announcement was considered surprising to city officials and residents, and each will be closing on June 23.

Hy-Vee reportedly operates over 280 locations.
