JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — This week, communities nationwide are honoring the dedicated professionals who provide lifesaving care in emergencies. National EMS Week, observed annually, recognizes the commitment and sacrifices of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel while raising awareness about their critical role in public health and safety.
Today, the spirit of EMS Week resonated deeply within the Johnson County Rescue Squad, where a remarkable group of young EMT candidates took a significant step toward joining this noble profession. The entire class of emergency medical technician (EMT) students from Johnson County High School successfully passed their state psychomotor exam, marking a milestone in their journey to become certified EMTs.
A Week of Recognition and History
EMS Week, first authorized by President Gerald Ford in 1974, celebrates the critical work of EMS practitioners and recognizes their selfless service. This weeklong observance includes various events, such as EMS recognition days, public education sessions, and community outreach programs designed to enhance the visibility and understanding of EMS roles.

Under the guidance of their instructor, Matt Cornett, a seasoned paramedic with years of experience, the students have spent months preparing for this moment. Cornett expressed immense pride in his students' accomplishments.
“They’ve shown incredible dedication and perseverance,” Cornett said. “It’s not easy balancing high school studies with the demanding training required for EMT certification, but they’ve done it with flying colors.”
