JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — This week, communities nationwide are honoring the dedicated professionals who provide lifesaving care in emergencies. National EMS Week, observed annually, recognizes the commitment and sacrifices of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel while raising awareness about their critical role in public health and safety.

Today, the spirit of EMS Week resonated deeply within the Johnson County Rescue Squad, where a remarkable group of young EMT candidates took a significant step toward joining this noble profession. The entire class of emergency medical technician (EMT) students from Johnson County High School successfully passed their state psychomotor exam, marking a milestone in their journey to become certified EMTs.

A Week of Recognition and History

EMS Week, first authorized by President Gerald Ford in 1974, celebrates the critical work of EMS practitioners and recognizes their selfless service. This weeklong observance includes various events, such as EMS recognition days, public education sessions, and community outreach programs designed to enhance the visibility and understanding of EMS roles.

Since its inception, EMS Week has evolved to honor current EMS personnel and inspire future generations. It underscores the importance of the rapid, pre-hospital medical care that EMS teams provide, often making the difference between life and death.

    A New Generation of Lifesavers

At Johnson County Rescue Squad, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation and determination as the high school EMT students undertook their state psychomotor exam. This rigorous assessment tests the practical skills necessary for emergency medical care, including patient assessment, CPR, trauma management, and other critical procedures.

Under the guidance of their instructor, Matt Cornett, a seasoned paramedic with years of experience, the students have spent months preparing for this moment. Cornett expressed immense pride in his students' accomplishments.

“They’ve shown incredible dedication and perseverance,” Cornett said. “It’s not easy balancing high school studies with the demanding training required for EMT certification, but they’ve done it with flying colors.”

    A Community Effort

The success of the Johnson County High School EMT class is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the local community, the school district, and the rescue squad. The program was initiated as part of a broader effort to cultivate interest in medical careers among young people and to address the growing need for EMS professionals.

Johnson County High School recognizes the program's importance. Students understand that the program provides them with valuable skills and career opportunities and instills a sense of responsibility and service to the community.

    Looking Ahead

With their psychomotor exam now behind them, the students can take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive exam, the final step toward full certification. As they move closer to becoming certified EMTs, many of these students plan to continue their education in medical fields, while others are eager to begin serving their community immediately.

As National EMS Week continues, the achievements of these young EMT students serve as a powerful reminder of the vital importance of emergency medical services and the bright future ahead for the next generation of EMS professionals.

    About EMS Week

National EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide day-to-day lifesaving services on medicine's “front line.” It offers an opportunity to educate the public about the critical role of EMS and promotes the importance of pre-hospital care.

This year’s EMS Week theme, “EMS: Where Emergency Care Begins,” emphasizes the integral part that EMS professionals play in the healthcare continuum, from providing immediate medical care to transporting patients to healthcare facilities. The theme highlights the bravery and expertise of EMS providers and the essential services they offer in times of crisis.
