JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Nestled in the heart of Johnson City, Freiberg’s German Restaurant offers a unique culinary experience that transports diners straight to Germany. With its dark wood, exposed brick, and old-world ambiance, this small, two-story establishment is a beloved local gem.

Freiberg’s German Restaurant, established in 2008 by Andreas Herholz and his wife Michele, has built a reputation for its authentic German cuisine and warm hospitality. Named after Andreas’s hometown of Freiberg, an 800-year-old silver mining town in East Germany, the restaurant at 203 E. Main Street is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, who appreciate the meticulous attention to detail in both the decor and the menu.

Upon entering, guests are greeted by the inviting sight of a cozy bar with just five stools. Dining alone at the bar is a comfortable experience, where patrons can enjoy the company of friendly servers who are always polite and helpful.

Today, as the summer heat peaked outside, the cool interior of Freiberg’s provided a refreshing respite. The lunch menu offered a delightful array of options. One patron enjoyed an unsweetened iced tea served in a large beer mug, accompanied by cheddar bratwurst, sauerkraut, and broccoli. The meal was rounded off with sliced bread and green-onion-infused butter, a small indulgence worth the extra cost. The portion sizes were perfect, satisfying diners without feeling overly full—a crucial factor on such a hot day.

The upstairs dining area offers views of the nearby farmer’s market pavilion and the lower dining level. The serene and picturesque setting adds to the overall dining experience, evoking a sense of nostalgia and contentment.

Freiberg’s menu is a celebration of traditional German fare. From schnitzels and sausages to pretzels and strudels, each dish is prepared with authentic ingredients and techniques. The cheddar bratwurst, for instance, is a standout item known for its rich, savory flavor and perfect texture. Freiberg’s dishes are made from scratch, with some taking hours to prepare and cook. This dedication to quality means that occasionally, certain dishes may sell out, but there is always a vast selection of menu options, including a variety of vegetarian dishes like lentil soup, potato skins, and vegetable plates.

The restaurant’s history is as rich as its food. Andreas and Michele Herholz embarked on their culinary journey to bring a slice of German culture to Tennessee. Their commitment to offering the utmost German experience with authentic dishes and imported German beer has made Freiburg’s a popular destination.

Diners often comment on Freiberg's sense of community. The intimate setting, combined with the attentive service, makes it a place where people can relax and enjoy a meal, whether alone or with friends and family. Freiberg's offers takeout services for those who prefer to enjoy their meal at home, and call-ahead seating is available for parties larger than six.

As Johnson City continues to grow and evolve, Freiberg’s German Restaurant remains a reminder of the enduring appeal of good food and genuine hospitality. Freiberg's is the perfect destination for those looking to escape the summer heat and enjoy a taste of Germany.
