Umoja Festival Returns to Johnson City This Weekend

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The annual Umoja Festival is set to return to downtown Johnson City this weekend, celebrating African and African American culture through music, food, and family-friendly activities. The two-day event will take place on Friday, Sept. 15, and Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Umoja, which means "unity" in Swahili, has been a staple event in the Tri-Cities region for over two decades, drawing thousands of visitors each year. The festival will feature live performances, local vendors, a parade, and educational workshops designed to promote cultural awareness and diversity.

"We're excited to bring Umoja back to the heart of Johnson City," said festival organizer Emma Jobe. "This year, we have a fantastic lineup of artists and vendors, and we’re focusing on creating an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels welcome."

Highlights of the festival will include a performance by nationally recognized African drummers, a variety of soul food vendors, and activities for children such as face painting and storytelling. The event will kick off Friday with a traditional African dance performance followed by a vibrant parade down Main Street.

Admission to the Umoja Festival is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring their families. For more information about the event and a full schedule of performances, visit umojajc.org or follow the festival's social media pages for updates.

The Umoja Festival continues to be a proud tradition in Johnson City, promoting unity, cultural understanding, and celebration.
