Over the past few weeks, some of you may have noticed my absence from regular writing. I’ve been quieter than usual, and while part of that silence was intentional—due to a much-needed vacation—the events of my return home were far from what I had planned.

I spent two weeks exploring the United Kingdom. This journey was both exhilarating and enriching—the first week in England had me wandering through the streets of London, soaking in the history of iconic landmarks like the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, Stonehenge, Bath, Dover, and York. England has this unique ability to blend its storied past with the pulse of a modern, bustling city. I wandered through art galleries, indulged in local cuisine, and felt a sense of calm walking along the River Thames.

Then came Scotland, where my heart felt truly at peace. The highlands with their misty mountains and lochs, the quaint villages, and the ancient castles reminded me of how small we are in the grand scheme of nature’s design. Edinburgh’s vibrant energy and Glasgow’s unique charm offered a delightful contrast to the serene countryside. It was a week full of awe, and I reflected on the simplicity and beauty of life, far removed from the fast-paced chaos we often surround ourselves with.

I arrived home last Thursday, ready to resume my routine, only to be greeted with unexpected chaos. Early that morning, I received a phone call informing me of the severe flooding in Northeast Tennessee, a storm that had caught many of us off guard. Powerful hurricane-force winds swept through the region, leaving destruction in their wake. Instead of easing back into work mode, I went to work, contacting colleagues, friends, and family to check their safety.

The storm was relentless, and the sight of flooded roads, downed power lines, and damaged homes reminded me of the delicate balance between the peace we seek and the uncontrollable forces that can disrupt our lives. It’s a humbling experience to return from a place of such beauty and calm only to face the devastation that nature can so suddenly deliver. I couldn’t help but think about the stark contrast: just days earlier, I was standing on the shores of Loch Ness, taking in the quiet, and now, back home, the roar of a storm had unsettled the peace we sometimes take for granted.

While the UK trip offered me a break from the daily grind, the sudden crisis upon my return reminded me of life's unpredictability. It also reinforced something I experienced during my travels: the importance of community and connection. Whether it’s the kindness of a stranger in a foreign country or the rallying together of neighbors after a natural disaster, we are all woven into this tapestry of life that depends on our support for one another.

I’ll resume my writing with fresh eyes and new inspiration, but also with a deeper sense of gratitude for the safety of home and the resilience of our community. Northeast Tennessee is no stranger to challenges, and I’m confident we will rebuild and recover as we always have, just as Western North Carolina, Southwest Virginia, and the other impacted areas do. We rally to the cause.

Thank you for being so patient during my absence. I’m excited to reconnect with all of you, share more stories, and continue this journey together.
