JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The American flag was raised atop Tannery Knobs Wednesday ahead of Independence Day.

The flag waves at the top of a 100-foot flagpole on Tannery Knobs Mountain Bike Park. Tannery Knobs itself reaches a height of 1,006 feet.

The massive 30×50 flag was raised Wednesday and is visible from TVA Credit Union Ballpark for fans of the Johnson City Doughboys. It can also be spied from various places around the city.

Bryan Lauzon, co-chair of the Raise the Flag Project, told News Channel 11 that the organization hopes baseball fans will feel a sense of patriotism when they see the flag.

“As the national anthem is playing, and people look over centerfield and then they look towards the Doughboy statue and then up Tannery Knob to see these this gigantic flagpole and an American flag, it should be stirring for all in the audience,” Lauzon said. “And we hope that it’ll be well received [Wednesday] and indefinitely.”

The flag was raised for the 4th of July holiday and will remain up through Sunday.

Lauzon said the organization is still awaiting lights for the flag. Those lights, once installed, will illuminate the flag at night.

“We’re still waiting for the lights to come in,” Lauzon said. “Specially built LED lighting that will cast the beam 85 feet or more to illuminate the flag at night, which is required by the flag code.”

Once the lights are installed, the flag will remain raised unless severe weather is present.

The flag pole was installed in May and was first raised for the Doughboys opening game in June. The flag pole is anchored by 33 square yards (roughly 4,000 pounds) of concrete.

In most cases, a 20×30 flag will fly from the peak of Tannery Knobs, but on special occasions like Independence Day, the larger version will be raised.

Lauzon said the Raise the Flag Project is not yet complete.

According to Lauzon, the second phase of the project will feature the installation of a small memorial wall by the flagpole. Labor Day has been targeted as the completion date for Phase 2.
