JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The League of Women Voters will host a forum in Johnson City Tuesday night.

The forum will focus on the four proposed amendments to Johnson City’s charter , which voters will see on their ballots on Aug. 1.

Controversy over proposed Johnson City charter changes up for vote in August election

The forum will start at 7 p.m. in the Langston Centre with News Channel 11’s Kasey Marler acting as the event’s moderator.

The entire event will be streamed live on WJHL.com.

The Johnson City Commission approved the ordinances in April, sending the proposed charter changes to voters for final say. Below is a brief description of each of the proposed charter changes:

    • Reducing the number of times the city’s budget must be advertised in the newspaper from twice to once
    • Giving the city manager the authority to make temporary employee appointments for longer than 90 days
    • Reducing the number of required readings for ordinances from three to two
    • Moving the municipal elections from November to August to align with county elections and moving the school board primaries from August to March

The ordinance to change the election dates would extend the terms for some elected officials.
