JCPD promotes autism awareness with challenge coin

The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) has teamed up with The Arc Washington County to develop a challenge coin to encourage autism awareness. The coin is called the ‘Bear-rier Breaker’ because it is in the shape of a bear. The bear, pictured on one side of the coin, symbolizes courage, protection and wisdom. The son of a JCPD officer helped design the coin.

“My son, Max, was diagnosed with autism at an early age. He drew a Tennessee flag autism puzzle piece and wrote ‘Autism Awareness.’ Both are featured on the back of the coin,” said Sgt. Shane Malone.

All proceeds from the sale of the coin will go to The Arc Washington County. The non-profit organization provides services and resources for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Money generated through the challenge coin fundraiser will go directly toward supporting individuals with autism and their families through resources and advocacy.

“The Arc has helped us and many other families over the years to provide funding for therapies we probably wouldn’t have gotten,” added Sgt. Malone.

The presale period for the JCPD Autism Awareness Challenge Coin will close July 31. The coins will be ordered the first week of August. The $29 cost includes shipping. Go to https://www.arcwc.org/ to place an order.
