JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) and The Arc Washington County have teamed up for autism awareness by developing a challenge coin.

The challenge coin is called the ‘Bear-rier Breaker’ and is in the shape of a bear. The bear symbolizes courage, protection and wisdom.

“My son, Max, was diagnosed with autism at an early age. He drew a Tennessee flag autism puzzle piece and wrote ‘Autism Awareness,’ both are featured on the back of the coin,” JCPD Sgt. Shane Malone said in a news release.

Proceeds from the coin sale will go towards The Arc Washington County, a non-profit that provides services and resources for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“The Arc has helped us and many other families over the years to provide funding for therapies we probably wouldn’t have gotten,” Malone said.

Presale for the coins runs until July 31 and costs $29 with shipping. The coins will then be ordered the first week of August.
